China succeeds in producing the ductile cast iron storage and transport container for radioactive wastes

     On May, 25th, the self-developed ductile cast iron high integrity container passed the expert appraisal. This container makes up for the blanks of China producing the ductile cast iron storage and transport container for radioactive wastes. Not only does it guarantee the much safer and more reliable radwaste disposal in the nuclear power plant, but also promotes the feasibility validation and official release of the relevant national standards.

     The appraisal group is composed of experts from Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center under the Ministry of Environmental Protection of P. R. C. and CNNC Qingyuan Environment and Technology Engineering Co., Ltd. After carefully listening to the work report, reviewing the relevant information, inspecting the on-site container as well as discussing and assessing, the expert group agrees this container passes the appraisal in that the design and manufacture of the sample meet the technical requirements of relevant standards and the container’s results of the spray test, penetration test, stack test and drop test fulfill the standards.

     The ductile cast iron high integrity container can maintain the integrity for 300 or more years with characteristics such as stable material, good durability, high strength and tenacity, strong shield to radiation, etc. However, the manufacturing technology of this container is sophisticated and the requirements on internal defects are very strict. In spite of that, the ductile cast iron high integrity container produced by China Nuclear Huaxing Specialized Project, Co., Ltd. of Jiangsu, has passed ultrasonic test and reached the casting UT requirements of European standards.

     According to mid-long term development plan of China’s nuclear power plants, the installed capacity of China’s NPPs in operation will reach 58 gigawatts while the installed capacity of China’s NPPs in construction will be around 30 gigawatts in 2020. It is undoubted that we must face the treatment and disposal of radioactive wastes with the development of nuclear power plant. This is why it grows the public’s concern. In this very aspect, the ductile cast iron high integrity container has unparalleled and incomparable safety advantages than other containers.

     China Nuclear Huaxing Specialized Project, Co., Ltd. of Jiangsu started the R&D of radwaste container manufacture and radwaste treatment and disposal as early as 2000. In 2008, it established radioactive waste container research center. Thus the company has taken in-depth studies on the model, structure, mold system, special manufacturing equipment, concrete performance, test, QA system, standards, technology industrialization of the container, etc. In addition, it undertook and completed the relevant research projects of the State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. In Sep. 2014, the company successfully passed the certification of Jiangsu Hi-tech Enterprise. Up till now, it has been awarded 9 national patents in container manufacture.

    Currently, the company has the capacity of manufacturing storage and transport containers for low and intermediate level radioactive wastes in various materials, specifications and models to meet the needs of different clients. Furthermore, the products have been widely applied in China’s nuclear power plants.
